The Poetry of Light
The Poetry of Light, an exploration of the themes of solidity, transparency and lucidity.
These natural materials of stone, formed in the deep dark belly of the earth over hundreds of millions of years under immense pressure, are contemporary amulets of beauty and reverence, rooted in the values of antiquity.
Human beings have revered and worked with stone for over three million years. We held and imagined forms in the material of stone long before we were acquainted with metal and its fluid, melting intelligence.
This carved stone work is formed on the shoulders of our ancestors of the Neolithic. Let us drink that in. We come from a lineage of dexterous intelligence and creativity with materials that goes back millions of years. We are so fortunate to to have the result of so much creative experimentation.
Much later adopted by the Greeks and Romans; carved quartz especially has been venerated for Millenia. The Romans used rock crystal to signify power through clarity over opulence for high ranking individuals. Intaglios were also favoured in rock crystal as its hardness and durability could handle detailed engravings.
I adore clear and smoky quartz for its ability to express light through translucency. What is clear becomes solid, light surrounds yet also penetrates. The crystal chosen for each piece contains inclusions, allowing us to peer into the beauty formed from the pressure of millions of tonnes of earth.
Contrasting with translucency, the materials of Onyx and Lapis allow us to feel the density and solidity if this stone, still surrounded by light. Density is what the artist sculpts with.
The poetic riddle of being a human being requires us to create beauty with the materials of our solidity and dense darkness, as well as light.
In this carved stone collection exploring amber honey-like citrine, joyous chrysoprase, clear liquid like clear and smoky quartz, mystical lapis, and power enhancing onyx, light and density exist together in clean, sculptural amulets for your pleasure and appreciation.
The lineage of stone carving goes back almost 7,000 years, may you feel the strength of this tradition of human craft.
