The Christian demonic association with goats , with Pan, lustfulness and disorderly being is a fairly recent one, mythologically. The term 'scapegoat' comes from an ancient Jewish tradition of ritualistic and symbolic loading the suns of a community into a goat. Maybe they knew the resilience of the goat could take it.

Goats and sheep evolved from a common ancestor from the Caprine genus, and were domesticated during the agricultural revolution in the Fertile Crescent, circa 11,000 years ago.
