I am grateful for my audience of followers and customers who named these earrings Medusa. Here is my contribution to what you see...

From the most ancient to the most recent expressions, women are still characterised as mothers, maidens or monsters; and in each case they are idolized, damaged, or destroyed by the ruling influence of patriarchal power. Thus, The Myth of Medusa has been caged into a neat little tale that condemns women for their beauty, their sensuous intelligence, and silences them in the face of their power being expressed in the world.

Medusa, a beautiful young maiden, worshipping at the Temple of Athena, is sexually assaulted by Neptune. As a punishment for desecrating the holy space, Medusa is turned into a monster of spewing serpentine hair, whose gaze turns men to stone. It is the Goddess Minerva, a Virgin Queen, who wields this fate.

Many of us have experienced being punished for being who we are- for expressing ourselves in the true theatre of our entirety. Worse still, we ourselves can feel like monsters when we leave the neat confines of socially permitted decorum as to how as women we must manifest. Maiden nor mother, then what else are we permitted to be? It matters not what society will permit, what matters is that we ourselves dismantle the conditioning that patterns our energy to be expressed in such codified ways. We are as we are- we need not name it. We are each of us whole, complete and untranslatable beings, complete with our own Mythological unfolding, personal triumphs and delicious unknown.

Another gem we can take from this Myth is that Minerva, celebrated for her virginity and purity, punishes Medusa for her assault, severing their connection as sisters and feeding the unhelpful narrative of women being untidy, emotional beings who incite dangerous lust in men.

Minerva’s response to the assault of Medusa might have been very different had the myth been invented by a woman.

Patriarchy is cunning in the way it encourages and educates women to denigrate one another in competition for the benefits of male approval.

When women are allied with each other, forces of great adversity can be overcome, not simply for women, but for humanity as a whole. We have become far too familiar with the sense of threat when a woman is successful in her life, love and spirit. There is infinite sensual expression, it is inexhaustible. There is enough for each and every one of us.

Myths are potent energy releasers. They can mirror to us something ineffable, at the fringes of our awareness they can cavort their radiant tentacles of sweet and bitter nutrition, so that we may drink.

These earrings are an enshrined inspiration to release the shackles of unconscious codified expression, of neatness, of being good as a way to mask the fear of truly unleashing our magic on the world.

May you be yourself, without silencing your expression, and may your true silence be your choice. May we encourage the bravery in one another. May we speak.

Why reach for beauty?

When we encourage a more sensual intelligence, enjoying the forms we see, hear, touch, smell and taste, we feel the poetry of life as it is in real time. An appreciation for the raw, the unrefined and the mysterious springs from this sensuality.

My jewellery is absolutely stunning and I shall treasure it forever and a day. I adore your work and appreciate the ceremony and sacred essence that go into it.

I am in awe of the beauty of my jewellery. I wore it at the weekend and cannot put into words how I felt in it. It felt so precious to adorn myself with these sacred pieces, they feel so much like antiquity.
